University as Community Partners: What responsibility do universities have to their host communities?
CHRISTOPHER WINSHIP | Diker-Tishman Professor of Sociology, Faculty of Arts and Sciences; Senior Faculty, HKS
Thursday, November 15
1:30 – 2:30 pm
Belfer, Weil Town Hall, Lobby Level
Harvard Kennedy School
What responsibility do universities have to their host communities? What are the most effective ways that universities can contribute to their communities? How can universities, faculty and students avoid noblesse oblige, and work in true partnership with others in their community. Professor Winship will also discuss the work of the Boston Area Research Initiative (BARI).
Christopher Winship is the Diker-Tishman Professor of Sociology in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and a member of the senior faculty in the Harvard Kennedy School. He is a research associate at the Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations, the Criminal Justice Program, the Institute for Quantitative Social Science, and a faculty associate of the Science, Technology and Society program. Prior to coming to Harvard in 1992, he was Professor of Sociology, Statistics, and Economics at Northwestern University. He is the author of articles on various statistical and methodological issues including the analysis of qualitative dependent variables, selection bias, and counterfactual causal analysis. His research has also focused on changes in the social and economic status of African Americans during the 20th century, particularly changes in youth unemployment, marital behavior, and prison incarceration. Another line of research has resulted in a series of articles critiquing the findings in The Bell Curve. Since 1994 he has been working with and studying a group of black inner-city ministers known as The Ten Point Coalition and their efforts with the Boston Police Department to deal with youth violence. In 2007 he coauthored Counterfactuals and Causal Inference (Cambridge University Press) with Stephen L. Morgan. He holds a PhD from Harvard.
All Frontline with Faculty seminars are open to the public. Video recordings will be available on the Hauser Center’s Vimeo channel approximately one week after the seminar. Please check back at http://vimeo.com/hausercenter.
The Frontline with Faculty Series is a venue for Harvard faculty affiliated with the Hauser Center to share their work and research with faculty colleagues, as well as students in an informal setting that will allow for spirited discussion, debate and exchange. The seminars link faculty experts from Harvard Schools and beyond on a wide range of topics. The Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Harvard University seeks to expand understanding and accelerate critical thinking about civil society among scholars, practitioners, policy makers and the general public, by encouraging scholarship, developing curriculum, fostering mutual learning between academics and practitioners, and shaping policies that enhance the sector and its role in society.
